Time Walkers

The Beginnings

A new and differnt type of story. This is a test of sorts to see if it will fly. It is intended to be a series of short storys revolving around history.

A flash of light, like lightning. The door way was illuminated, within and without. Like stars dancing in the skies. The doorway to the past was open. Adventurers from the year 2225, headed by the renowned explorer, Walter Stevens age, thirty two. His team of explores were explorers of history. They would travel and see history as it happens.

The team consisted of Walter, Jake Langley, age forty seven from old New York, Sharon Stevens, Walters wife age thirty. She was a researcher in her own right. The paper she had just published on the use of history to teach ethics had won her notoriety. Next, was Isaac Thomas, or Ike a he was known. He was picked for a balance, though he himself doubted the study of history would amount to anything. He was a stubborn sort. And last on the team was, Kelly Summers, an honor graduate and the youngest member at the age of twenty two,

There were also, Mac Durum, who was the head of the technical department and the resident guru of the Time Walker devise. And, last but not least, Stacy Thomas, Ike’s exwife and the medical technician of the group. These remained in the future to monitor the five travelers or Time Walkers as they traveled into history. The would observe history in the making, but would not interfere or cause any changes in history. They were equipped with currency and clothing of the period and instructed as to whom they could interact with, without changing history.

They would stay in each period of time, just one week and would be returned to the lab where the equipment was located. They traveled together as a team so that all inputs could be recorded and evaluated. That was the reason for the diverseness of the team. To see history, from different points of view. Walt would , upon return, record all the data into a paper to be presented to the council for historical affairs.

This was an historical moment, in its own right. The first trip for the team and the third such journey into the past. Their target, Buckman’s Tavern, and the shot heard around the world. A moment that set a period of history and changed a country forever.

The light flashed as all five walked together into the light of the frame, the door flashed a brilliance so that none could see, then it was gone. Only a dirt road and a building standing a little ways off. A horse and rider ambled down the dust road. His destination seemed the tavern as well. The group, move as well for the same. They would try to blind in and observe as much as possible. The event was a couple of days away and they wanted to see the events preceding the shot as well.

The door was thrown open and a patron was tossed out on his ear and very nearly landed on the same ear. He was clearly drunk, but it did not seem to mater to him. He merely dusted himself off, slapped his hat on his head and walked away. The tri corner hats of the day were evident every where. It was good that they wore clothing of the day, or this trip would be for nothing.

The raw smoke and smell of alcohol filled the dimly lit rooms. Tables surrounded by all manner of men. Redcoats and patriots alike. Over drink, a little peace was seen, thought it would seem tedious at the moment. A redcoat and a patriot were trading barbs, though, not quite friendly.

Walt edged up to the bar to ask a little information. At the name of Revere, a couple of heads turned in his direction. One of them, Sylvanus Wood. He was friends with Captain Parker, the commander of the Lexington Company. Both knew Paul and were protective of him.

I am hoping for a series of short stories of adventures type. Not doing the piece of history, but a visit into it.

"redcoats and patriots," is it? how about "loyalists and traitorous rebels?" dam colonials, a bit more tyranny and a little less British decency would have soon whipped you undisciplined ungrateful rentiers into shape. too soft on you, we were.

(you know we'll get it all back one day, don't you?)
