Show off your new and WIP ships! **New Thread**

As I stated in the previous thread, this is the new thread for showing off all your ship models. Same rules apply here, you can direct link to images only if they are small. If they are large, either leave URL links or thumbnails. The old thread will remain stickied and can be found here.

ey all. here are some pics of the first ship i have ever made. It is a pretty accurate model of an SR-71 Blackbird (if you haven't heard of it google it). haven't textured it yet (still learning how to do that lol), but i have completed the mesh, and have plenty of concept sketches, so i know where i'm going with this model. i'm also currently learning to do hardpoints, CMP files, etc ... so watch for future posts. enjoy!

even though it doesn't look like it sometimes, all the triangles are facing outwards. also, no matter what i try i can't get the engine nacelles to be all grey. for some reason they like being that striped pattern.

Made using Milkshape v1.7.0
poly count: 1670
triangles: 1036

any comments/ideas would be much appreciated, as i'm a complete newbie to making FL ships. please don't be afraid to point out any point out any flaws as harshly as you please, the more you tell me about the model, the more i can learn. many thanks!

P.S. appoligies if the images are included in this post. that was not my intention. I couldn't figure out how to do them as thumbnails. sorry once again.

the problem you see there is with welding/smoothing - your poly count still has a little room, if welding/smoothing the verts doesn't work then the angles between facets are too acute, so try using a cylinder with more sides to make the cones. i hope this helps some - if it doesn't you could just use one of the fine SR71 meshes already available on the net :/

thanks for the info, but where could i get a free mesh on the net from? i've spent ages googling through sites to find models that cost $30 here and £50 there. I'm not paying that, i'm just a humble student. thanks again!

goto - it will bring up princeton's 3d model archive search engine - some of the models are commercial but most are free.many of the free models are in unusable formats like WRL,but they also have dxf and 3ds,i tried both links for the dxf model and the 3ds - the dxf model is still available but the .3ds model from 3dcafe is not(or 3dcafe no longer allows free-linking eg you must register) - i would try to track down the 3ds mesh from because it is much higher detail and very professional compared to the super low poly dxf(which is really more suitable as a guide then a source)

I don't think you should tell anyone to go around and get a freeware model of the ship they're trying to make. What's the point? Eight Ball's ship is a very nice ship and as he said he is just starting, quite impressive for a beginning piece of work.

I'm liking the model, grouping it may likely prove to be difficult due to the amount of curves and lack of flat faces. Only other recommendations I have would be to try some extrusions in the model. If you do not know how, this is what I mean. Select a face (or multiple) and click the extrude tool. You can extrude the face in towards the model slightly and it will create an indent. You then scale the new face slightly down so that you don't have duplicate faces (they "shimmer" or flash black and white in Milkshape). I can show you some examples if you want. But like I said, the ship is looking good. Hope it turns out well in game, Freelancer is sometimes picky about long ships, they look a bit weird in the flight angle.

Not bad at all for a beginner. Anyone who ever knew anything about the SR71 would recognize your model. There is no mistaking that undeniable profile.
With some time and practice, you're going to learn how to do more with less.

Korben: These fighters look awesome!!! I really like the design and they fit perfectly into the FL style as alien-like ships.

Do you model them for a certain mod? or could other mods also use these fighters?
I ask, because Monkey Universe could need some new models.

im modelling those for soon to come Rise of the Lost Children mod
made by me w support from my fellow clan members

those are supposed to be DomKavash ships, creators of Nomads.

after we release the mod which is almost done i will make also some ship packages and tuts from stuff i used in the mod

Some of you may have already seen the old or new version of this ship. But if you haven't...Here it is

Name: Cyclone
Class: Escort/Heavy Fighter
Armor: 6500
Level: 7/9
Guns: 4
Torpedo Slots: 2
Mines: 2
Thrusters: 2

By default the ship goes at about 120 and also has pretty good handling and a cool custom engine effect. It's part of the Epsilon Mod and the new version (the version shown in this post) can be found as part of the ship teaser pack here.

yes i've already made a very cool looking ship (i think it is anyways) and i cannot get it to be buyable anywhere and yes i've edited ship_market.ini and made a ship unsellable if neccesary and supposedly made my sellable but it just doesn't even show up to sell or have a hull in the fullscreen view.
