i know this has been too long... but you can use the oc setting to actually control the transparency of your glass... not oc for Opacity color... when oc is equivalent to 1 you will se the texture opaquely and if is less than 1 then it will be transparent. experiment on this so you could see the desired thickness effect that you want.

I use a customized default glass texture, then adjust the color and transparency on it.
Freelancer recognizes "glass" as a default for glass and it's a transparent blue tint. When I create a custom canopy for a ship, I give it a custom glass file name so Freelancer doesnt confuse it with others.
For instance: ship_name_glass
I use the utf editor to adjust the color to near "smokey glass" and make it very transparent.
