** TUTORIAL ** - Giant Suns

Ok, here's something i came up with nearly a year ago which others have worked out how to do as well but nobody has done a tutorial.... until now

You want giant suns, then read on.

Goto DATA\SOLAR\stararch.ini

[star
nickname = med_orange_sun
star_glow = orange2_starglow
star_center = yellow_starcenter
lens_flare = hex_red_lens_flare
lens_glow = default_lens_glow
spines = orange4_spines
intensity_fade_in = 0
intensity_fade_out = 0
zone_occlusion_fade_in = 1.000000
zone_occlusion_fade_out = 1.000000
radius = 3000.000000

This is the setup for a standard medium orange sun. Now to make a HUGE one lol

[star
nickname = Big_med_orange_sun <----- Change the name to whatever u like
star_glow = orange2_starglow
star_center = yellow_starcenter
lens_flare = hex_red_lens_flare
lens_glow = default_lens_glow
spines = orange4_spines
intensity_fade_in = 0
intensity_fade_out = 0
zone_occlusion_fade_in = 1.000000
zone_occlusion_fade_out = 1.000000
radius = 30000.000000 <----- **IMPORTANT** change the number to the radius size of your choice

The other lines enable various effects the sun has which can all be altered
This adjustment actually makes this sun 10x bigger than before. Remember to add it to your releveant system.ini file and voila, GIANT SUNS !!!!

nice, good tutorial Gibbon. made a sun that engulfs half of my system as a test

as an aside, is it possible to make a BLACK sun? dunno if its possible, but if anyone knows how, that'd be awesome (and literally wicked )

Yea I think you jsut change the color to black. or leave if blank if I am not mistaken from another forum I saw.........I think you add the word black.

Hey but the cool thing is that if any one uses FLE(aka. Freelancer Exploroer). You don't need to make a new id number for your new sun. You jsut make your new star, go to that program and BOOM it will show up in the list.
Thanks for the Tutorial.

One thing i've noticed with giant suns is once you've created them, they never showed up correctly at their new size in the navmap. Well the solution just came to me. In the DATA\SOLAR\SUNS folder are two .sph files, sun_1000 and sun_2000.

These files show the suns on the navmap. Now if you've made a custom sun say 50000 in diameter, then open up UTF editor, click on the tree until you see RADIUS, then edit this as a float array, and change the diameter to 50000, then save. I named the file sun_50000.sph. Then in any system file in your UNIVERSE folder that has a sun of that size, then amend your sun entry to look like this,

[Object
nickname = AC01_Sun1
ids_name = 464007
pos = 61601, 30000, -61601
ambient_color = 226, 16, 0
archetype = sun_50000 <---------------- Change this to reflect the new sun sph file
star = huge_red_sun <---------------- New sun defined in STARARCH
atmosphere_range = 53000
burn_color = 255, 0, 0
ids_info = 464007

Any problems then let me know

Wow a year later. "sigh"
Very interesting, but the size on the Nav. Map never really did bug me that much, I might not be as picky. Well then you would see some of the suns I have made and just say....."whoa that's a huge sun...",

BTW did you ever get a black sun to show up? I've never really gotten to where I wanted it.

Curse it all, i forgot you have to make a new entry in Solararch as well,

[Solar
nickname = sun_50000
ids_name = 60201
ids_info = 60202
type = SUN
DA_archetype = solar\suns\sun_50000.sph
mass = 1000000
solar_radius = 50000
shape_name = NNM_SM_SUN

I've tested this and it works a treat now

And no i haven't got round to the black sun concept yet, but now you come to mention it, think i'll give it a go...

If I remember this correctly, there were some effects for suns in the files that were apparently never implemented.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
One effect in particular was "pulsar" .

I haven't checked for any excess effects but it wouldn't surprise me if there were a few floating around, i'll look into the pulsar thing as i'm kinda curious if that works, would be nice to have a flashing star
