Whoa, Forum Reorganized

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Like a new version of Wing Commander? Would be nice.

I'd be tossing off hourly if they announced a new WC game, a real one that is, not that stupid bloody arena crap.

If a new WC comes out I'll whip out my homemade rougesquadron helmet and run around the block going Whoosh!

Edit: Hare face, do you want material or materiel?

The problem with Space sims, is that no-one knows how to make good ones any more. They're either too thin on details, too thick on details and the atmosphere/story is straight from 1001 Cheesy Storylines About Space. The last one that I would consider good was Starlancer and that was 7 years ago, FL was okay but it fell short IMO. There are to many elite clones out there these days, I personally think they need to get back to the 'on-rails' type games, with specific and focused missions. All I know is i'd give my left nut if Chris Roberts would start making Space sim games again, he's the only one whose done it with some flair.

I think it's the fact that they have to do work, make a whole new engine as old ones are pants, do all the graphics, sounds, coding, storyline etc. They're a big realm to start working upon... whereas it doesn't appear to take long to bang out another first person shooter, where the engine can be used for 2 of their own game titles (sequels) or flogged on to more developers. Just need texture artists to alter levels look, and that's about it - new storyline to do and your money is waiting.

Blows to be honest, looking forward to newer games of the future where hopefully people can fill the gaps between several "good" space sims to make a great one.

And what's wrong with the "Esquilax Reactor", hmm?

what's right with it, you mean?

@Chips: yep, 100% agree with you there colleague. Apart from modders and open-source projects, space combat sims are a rare beast indeed these days from games companies - as you say, too much effort for too little return because the teenies can be more easily and cheaply pleased by Quake 27 or NFL 2016 or Sims 19: Money for Old Rope Expansion.

back when pc games were first kicking off in the late 80s and early 90s, everyone wanted to be a space pilot.

You've got a point but I still think it's a cop-out for making crap games. There's so many rubbish space games out there that they only serve to lessen the genre rather than embolden it. If you don't have the budget, the skills or the ideas to make a great space game then don't, pushing out some half baked can of worms pisses off the purchaser, the publisher and ensures that they won't bother with another one.
