Windows Update

those of you who manually update your PCs will have noticed for a while now that our friends at Micro$oft have changed the Windows Update page by adding a validation stage. You naughty people with illegal copies of XP such as the bulk-volume corporate versions (shame on you!) will find that you can't get beyond this point, and quite right too, you 'orrible tea-leaves.

However - those of you who've altered your ntoskrnl file with utilities such as StyleXP will be having the same problem! About a week after M$ added an obligatory validation stage, I got lots of calls from people who I know have legit copies but couldn't get past this obstacle.

the answer - don't bother with the validation, go to Administrator Options on the Windows Update front page and from there go to the M$ Download site and do them manually - *some* will still require validation and you can't really do much about this if you have a modified ntoskrnl, unless you restore the original unmodified file and disable StyleXP or whatever is modifying that file. But most of the things you need like cumulative fixes, additions to the service pack and non-critical updates you can d/l manually no problem. And of course critical automatic updates are unaffected (mostly)

those of you with hookey copies, well if it won't validate you can hardly complain can you?

Thanks for that Taw, I'm sure that it will come in handy. In any case, I do not use MS Update anyway .

Not all of us are quite so anal about uninstalling software after every application and restoring system from image file after every use Mr. Hare Horse.

There is a way round the validation check using trixie for IE (to use windows update normally) or greasemonkey with firefox to browse the MS site. Just google it and you'll find out how to do it.

Why is it that every update Windows reccomends is regarding "A security issue [that has been identified that could allow an attacker to remotely comprimise your Windows based system..."

I've honestly lost track of how many of these patches I've installed. It sent eight more my way on the last cycle. At least the holes are being filled, presumably. Maybe it's MS's way of spamming.

akshuly its their way of patching an o/s which they put out before it was really ready. don't forget that XP is NT/2K adapted for general consumer use, which it was never originally intended to be. but i'd rather be patching and updating every few days than still using 98 or ME or trying to jigger 2K myself
